Automated border control e-gates have officially made their way to Italy’s Naples International Airport. The service is currently available to only European Union travelers.
The airport partnered with SITA, an international leader in air transport communications and information technology, to implement its iBorders BorderAutomation Automated Border Control (ABC) Gates. The e-gates have made the immigration process at Naples International Airport a smooth, “walk through” experience. SITA reports the machines’ processing time at 20 seconds per passenger and estimates than upwards of 2,000 travelers will use the e-gates every day.
The Director of Infrastructure and Operations at Naples International Airport said, “The new technology has helped improve the passenger experience at Naples Airport by speeding them through immigration while ensuring that we meet the highest security standards at Italy’s borders. The ABCGates are really a win-win technology for airports.
The ABCGates use facial recognition technology, to confirm the identity of the passport holder. The machines are supplemented with fingerprint verification technology to be used in situations when additional security is required.
David Bakker, SITA’s Europe President, said, “We continue to work with airlines, airports, and government agencies around the globe to provide the best-in-class self-service border technology. Through the use of biometrics, we are able to enhance the passenger experience by providing a swift passage through immigration while adhering to the highest possible security standards.”
Naples International Airport’s Head of Innovation and Automation, Giuseppe Musto, is very pleased the with the introduction of the e-gates and excited for how the technology will transform travelers’ experiences at Naples International. Musto said, “We have introduced another step in the passenger journey at Naples Airport, with a focus on quality and in accordance with the recent regulatory evolution in Italy.”
Nearly 30 governments globally have implemented SITA’s iBorders systems to keep their borders secure, transform their security operations, and expedite their immigration processes. Among International airports currently using the SITA e-gates system are Hamad International Airport in Qatar, Varna Airport and Burgas Airport in Bulgaria, and Lisbon International Airport in Portugal.
