This summer’s travelers voted Hawaii as the best destination to visit. Aside from its island culture, abundant beaches, and volcanic views, Hawaii is also home to Honolulu International Airport—named the best for summer travel experience in America by NerdWallet.com.
The website’s report ranked airports based on the following nine factors: the percentage of summer flights with delays longer than 30 minutes, the percentage of delays longer than one hour, the percentage of delays longer than two hours, average delay, longest delay, the percentage of flights canceled, average longest customs wait time, maximum customs wait time, and average Yelp star rating of restaurants inside the airport. In addition to this information, the study also included flight data from the U.S. Transportation Department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics for flights in June, July, and August.
Honolulu International Airport fell into the top spot, with just five percent of its delays being longer than 30 minutes and an average delay of four minutes. The second place honor went to John Wayne Airport in Southern California, who saw 11 percent of its delays lasting longer than 30 minutes and an average delay time of eight minutes.
Also named to the top ten American airports by NerdWallet.com were Mineta San Jose International Airport (California), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, San Diego International Airport, Salt Lake City International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, Portland International Airport (Oregon), and Oakland International Airport (California).
The report also tackled the challenge of naming the worst airports in the country visited this summer by travelers. Among them were Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, Chicago O’Hare, John F. Kennedy, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Washington Dulles, Chicago Midway, Miami, and Los Angeles. It’s no coincidence that travelers had their worst experiences in some of the country’s busiest airports from coast to coast.
If you’re looking for one last go at summer fun, try visiting Honolulu for glider trips, snorkeling expeditions, or tours of the USS Arizona Memorial and Diamond Head volcanic park. If the historic and unusual attractions in Honolulu aren’t enough to draw you in, the pleasant travel experience at Honolulu International should be.
